ASEIC's 2012 Eco-Innovation Consulting Project: Supporting Stronger, Greener SMEs in Asia
03 Apr 2012
ASEIC’s 2012 Eco-Innovation Consulting Project:
Supporting Stronger, Greener SMEs in Asia
April 3, 2012
Seoul, South Korea
ASEM SMEs Eco-Innovation Center (ASEIC) works to promote eco-innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in order to both strengthen their competitiveness in the changing global market, and to promote sustainable growth in Asia and Europe. ASEIC believes that eco-innovation in SMEs must involve two key components. First, companies must use and produce products, services, technologies, and processes which aim at the prevention of negative environmental impacts. Second, these eco-friendly practices should be utilized in a manner which creates new business opportunities for economic growth and sustainability.
With these targets in mind, ASEIC is announcing the follow-up to its successful pilot project of 2011. ASEIC’s 2012 Eco-Innovation Consulting Project in Asia will further previously-established partnerships, collaborating with colleagues at the UNEP International Resource Panel (IRP), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and the Vietnam National Cleaner Production Center (VNCPC). Key elements of the project include:

1.      Assessment and diagnosis of SMEs performance based on eco-innovation perspective
2.      Creation of recommendations to improve business capacity
3.      Compilation of comprehensive eco-innovation consulting guidelines to be implemented in the long term
4.      Support for SMEs’ voluntary implementation (through organizing workshops for managers and supervisors)
Between May and November 2012, ASEIC will initially provide business plans for integrating eco-innovation to 32 SMEs in ASEM member countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.  A key component of this venture will be efforts to enhance local knowledge of eco-innovation implementation, and its important role in SMEs. To encourage participation by local companies, ASEIC consultants will visit select industrial sites to assess the environmental impacts of their manufacturing processes.
One outstanding SME from each country will be featured in ASEIC’s best practices manual, and rewarded an all-expenses-paid trip to South Korea to inspect Korean industrial complexes, attend eco-innovation lectures, and develop new business relationships. At the end of the project, ASEIC and its partner firms will provide the SMEs with a comprehensive set of eco-innovation guidelines which can be used to promote long-term growth through eco-friendly practices.
