Vietnamese Officials Visit ASEIC, Discuss Possible Cooperation for Supporting SMEs

Officials from the Ministry of Planning and Investment of Vietnam paid a visit to ASEIC on March 27, 2012. Mr. VU XUAN THUYEN, Deputy-Director of Agency of Enterprise Development and Mr. NGUYEN QUANG VINH, Senior officer of SME Development Division had a meeting with the Center and discussed possible cooperation, especially on ASEIC’S consulting project.

The Agency of SME Development (ASMED) is a central government agency being responsible for coordinating policy formulation and implementation for the development of SMEs in Vietnam. It develops and consolidates assistance programs through coordinating, providing guidelines, and monitoring the implementation of them. In addition, the agency serves as secretariat of the SME Development Promotion Council of Vietnam.

At the meeting, ASEIC introduced “ASEM SMEs Eco-Innovation Consulting Project” which will be carried out from May in Vietnam and asked for the agency’s active participation in the project, especially in recruiting SMEs and informing them on the government’s funding programs. ASMED welcomed ASEIC’s global consulting project in Vietnam and promised its strong support.

In Vietnam, there were approximately 400,000 SMEs in 2011 which represented 99 percent of the total number of businesses and 80 percent of the retail market in the country. They, however, have faced barriers and challenges such as lack of financing, knowledge, resource and technology.

The ASEIC’s consulting project will provide SMEs in Vietnam with comprehensive guidelines and recommendations to optimize their business processes and to develop eco-innovation strategies.
